Thanks for the links and for visiting my blog. I definitely empathize with you. Have you asked SNF "what's the difference between a human being and a person?" and why should anyone accept that arbitrary criteria over the criteria of someone who says that women aren't "persons?" Pro-choicers use the term "person" to discriminate against human beings in the same way that other groups used the words "person" or "citizen" to discriminate against Jews, African-Americans, and women. He also seems to not understand what brain death means -according to the Uniform Death Act- brain death doesn't that a human being is alive yet not a person but it means that the human being is dead. Some of his assertions are very weak like "I say life begins when it can be fully sustained by itself." It's too bad for SNF that science says different. His criteria for when something is alive would then also eliminate people on respirators, newborn infants (they can't sustain their own lives- they are doomed to die if no one feeds them and clothes them), people with pacemakers, etc. etc. There are so many bad assertions in his comments that it would literally take hours to respond. When arguing with a non-Christian on abortion - using your faith and Bible verses usually doesn't work - you have to use facts that they will accept. He also seems to be a moral relativist - which makes arguing with him even more difficult because it's a worldview that is based on the notion that there are no moral truths. You might try to get him to fit his comments into a certain word length and then also limit your responses to him to a certain word length so it doesn't take hours to respond to his comments. Ask questions and ask for his evidence for his position - pro-choicers too often make assertions yet provide no evidence to back them up. Good luck. Thanks for the tips. You are right, his grip on "truth" does indeed seem slippery at best. As for a point by point rebuttal to his arguments, he is so far all over the place it is like whacking moles. They keep popping up all over the place, and keep coming back! His only support for his contention that an unborn child is not human is that it is parasitic, and not being able to support it's own life makes it non human. He never did offer a reason for me to accept that definition of human life not being human, other than that's what he "believes." For all his ranting against faith, seems like his whole argument is based on faith. The hospital turned off his life support because they said and I quote... 1. He is not aware of his own existence 2. He cannot sustain his own life 3. He is no longer capable of thought or reason Why have you not visited the point I've made about requesting fathers to give vital organs to their children to keep them alive once out of the womb. If the life of the fetus is more important than the life of the mother while in the womb... and we are assuming this is so because we are requiring her to nourish it from her own body and risk her health for it Why then wouldn't we require either parent to give up their life for their sick child after it is already born when no one is disputing rather or not it is a person? If we say it’s because we do not require someone to give their life for another, or give parts of their body to help keep others alive then I would say by that same definition we should not force a women to carry to term an unwanted fetus. Especially in the early stages when that fetus is not even aware of its own existence. And, a person on a respirator again passes some of the tests! A fetus passes none. You can't speak of science and not first understand the logic behind it! The evidence is! A fetus cannot be proven to do any of the following! 1. Sustain its own life 2. aware of its existence A person on a respirator is Aware of their own existence Some people in comas are Able to sustain their own life even though they are not Aware of their own existence But if they become 1. unable to sustain their own life 2. unaware of their own existence Then they cut off their life support essentially killing them as they did my brother! So my next statement will simply be this. If the hospital could kill my brother whom I loved and wanted to keep alive, who had been previously defined a person, was definitely living and outside of his mothers womb since he was 26 years old Why can't a woman abort her UNWANTED fetus that essentially cannot pass any of the tests they applied to my brother before removing him from his life support machines? That is the foundation of my argument. Sorry if the concept is too complex for you to get! These articles represent the views of the majority of the scientific community. I could post more, but I wont. It is really a simple matter. Abortion is already legal, so anyone wishing to change that status must prove to everyone else that abortion is wrong. Or, more directly that a fetus is a person. Not simply that it is made up of human genetic material. http://home.earthlink.net/~rdmadden/webdocs/Abortion_Philosophy_Sc.html http://www.scientists4pr.org/abortion1.htm http://www.csis.org/tech/Biotech/nbpp/Seminar3Brief.htm I am busy responding to comments right now, I’ll follow these links later. These articles represent the views of the majority of the scientific community. I see we’ve gone from speaking for the entire scientific community to only speaking for the majority of the scientific community. I could post more, but I wont. Thanks for keeping it brief. Abortion is already legal, so anyone wishing to change that status must prove to everyone else that abortion is wrong. Wasn’t abortion illegal before it was legal? Did any scientist prove that outlawing abortion was wrong prior to it being made legal? Your logic seems flawed here. Or, more directly that a fetus is a person. But by which definition do we establish that it is or is not a person? You have given me no basis to accept yours other than that it is the one you prefer. Though a infant child cannot feed itself, it can sustain its own life. By sustaining its own life, I mean that it can breath, pump blood, digest, etc... on its own without assistance from outside sources or someone else’s body. It is easy to find fault in my logic when you leave out the majority of the post and take what I’ve said out of context. If you lack the capacity to understand the fundamental truths I figured you could discern without my explanation then I am truly unable to reason with you.... EDITED FOR BREVITY At this point, he continues to try to reason with me. He asserts we ought apply the same standard to a brain dead person as an unborn child. He then argues that the unborn child is legally dead, and that’s why abortion is legal. A human being is defined as “a rational individual,” a fetus is a parasite, and is not a human being. I should read biology and genetic textbooks, and pray that in my next life I have a better brain. But how does that make it more human than an unborn child? If you apply the same rules of “personhood” to a fetus that you apply to a brain dead person… Here is the crux of the matter. You have applied that standard, and demanded that I do the same. The two are not the same. A brain-dead patient is DEAD. An unborn child is not. You are arguing that they are the same, yet you have offered no proof to substantiate that position. You have argued that the unborn child is; *Alive *Not alive *Human *Not human [T]he fetus, like the brain dead person, does not pass and is therefore considered legally dead! Show me a reference to a law or statute that defines an unborn child as being legally dead. This argument is silly. I believe this is why abortions have been and are currently legal now! No, they have been legal because some judges (not scientists) decided that a woman’s right to privacy (which is not in the constitution, by the way,) out weighs the unborn child’s right to be born. Until the third trimester, for whatever reason. To simplify this even further, for those of us who are intellectually challenged. I assume your talking about yourself, seeing as you’re not one to engage in a personal attack against your debate opponent. A human being “is a rational individual” Have you watched c-span lately? By that definition, half of congress ought to be aborted. A fetus fits the definition of a parasite more closely than it does the definition of a human being. Only if rationality defines humanity. Give me a scientific reason to agree that it does. Where do you get these definitions? If a human being is by definition a “rational individual” then a fetus is not a human being. This is my proof, consult the dictionary for verification! Then a fetus must be a human being, because the source I checked (Wikipideia)says nothing of the “rational individual” criteria you cite. Consult biology and genetic text books referring to the gestation process and the development of the fetus, and notice when the central nervous system becomes functional! Moot point. The ability to think rationally does not define the beginning of a human life cycle. Before there is a central nervous system the fetus is almost identical to a brain dead person living like a parasite off the life support machine, only in the case of the fetus the machine is its mother! Not to mention that the unborn child is alive and has the capacity to continue living. The brain-dead patient is, by definition, dead and has no capacity to resume living. This is as simple as I can make it for you! As simple as it is, it is still logically flawed. … hope that the next time around “YOUR GOD” will see fit to bless you with a better mind! Ooh, I’m so ashamed of my inferior intellect. You have really demonstrated that your capacity for rational thought is so much greater than mine. If only I had gone to college, then I might be half as smart as you. If you were capable of analyzing anything then perhaps you would be qualified to make such a statement as "As simple as it is, it is still logically flawed" The only thing that is logically flawed around here is your use of the scientific method, and your definition of objectivity. - the first rule of properly applying the scientific method is objectivity - the 2nd is to make sure that your source has been independently confirmed... I doubt this passes either of the above criteria... Wikepedia: EDITED FOR BREVITY News Flash! Wikipedia is a Christian Creationist religious text! How DARE I quote a religious encyclopedia such as Wikipedia for a definition of human being. Threatening women with hell fire will not stop them from going overseas for abortions, a history book would show that morality cannot be imposed by force. Europe and Asia will cure cancer and AIDS through (embryonic) stem cell research, while America is in the dark ages of religious ignorance and filth. We will never agree on this issue, but YOUR logic will always be flawed if you continue to refuse to view this in an objective manner. Quoting religious text and entries from a religious encyclopedia hardly qualifies as evidence in support of your argument. This has been fun but since you've degenerated into lunacy and have begun to utilized questionable debate ethics I feel that you have now become “a waste” of my time. Happy trails Christian soldier enlightenment awaits you in the REAL world. "Where do you get these definitions?" - Glenn If you ever get tired of lying to yourself, or for any other OBJECTIVE individuals interested in doing their own research the definitions I get come from the real encyclopedias (like the ones found at the library or any PUBLIC school) the links I posted all 3 of them any biology, psychology, or genetics text book any other non Christian OBJECTIVE SCIENTIFIC source - rule of thumb if the title of your source has the words god, Christian, or bible in it whatever is printed within is probably a load of uncorroborated factually challenged crap! good luck.
