American Standard Champion, Round 3

I am Facilities Manager of an office building. I had 4 of these toilets installed by licensed plumbers in late 2004. In addition to having to perform the fixes described above, I have had to repeatedly replace the flush valve seals (gasket ring) due to leaking, and entire flush valve assemblies due to broken parts inside the assembly. One also has to gingerly press the plush handle in order to get a complete flush, if you press to quickly or forcefully you will only get a partial flush. Not a real problem for a household, but a bit difficult when there are over 100 different users to train. American Standard also thought it would be a good idea to install flow restrictors in the fill valves to quiet the operation of the toilet. Along with quieting the operation, the flow restrictors slow the filling of the toilet tank. In time they will begin to clog to the point where it will take several minutes to refill the tank. I ended up removing them due to repeated calls that a toilet “would not flush”. I have also had several handles break. Even though American Standard is very good about sending out replacement parts, it takes 7-12 business days to receive them. A real show stopper if it happens to be your only toilet.

Sure if you want to reinvent this toilet it is an ok toilet, but why put yourself through the grief. I would personally suggest a toilet with the Sloan Flushmate tank system. They are a bit more expensive up front, but I have had 10 years of near trouble free service from six of these toilets in a commercial environment. And boy do they flush! It is almost scary at first. Recently I have had to replace several of the tanks due to leakage (air, not water), but all but one were replaced under warranty. The newer tanks carry a lifetime warranty. I will be replacing the 4 Champion toilets with the Flushmates later this year due to repeated maintenance calls.
